For eleven autumns, Perrin has left a basket of windfall apples on Old Sennel’s step. She has never knocked. She has never waited to see. Her grandmother’s ledger is plain about the rule, in handwriting gone the colour of strong tea:
Leave them at the usual hour. Don’t wait to see. It isn’t a gift if it wants thanking.
Sennel has not spoken to anyone on his lane in forty years. Not from grief, and not from grievance. It simply stopped being a thing he did, the way a path grows over.
This autumn a graft Perrin’s grandmother set nine years ago has borne for the first time — three small apples, dark almost to black, on a tree that was never quite theirs to begin with. And Perrin finds she wants, without much dignity about the wanting, for one of them to matter to the man behind that door.
So she wraps one in clean linen. She sets it square in front of his step, off the hour, off the pattern. And she knocks.
Nothing answers.
Sennel’s Lane is a quiet story about the difference between a gift and a claim, and about what a village does with a silence it has agreed for forty years not to disturb. There are no villains in Nine Ashes. Nothing here needs saving. There is an orchard, a ledger, a basket, and a rule worth keeping.
The Elves of Nine Ashes is a cozy fantasy series of standalone stories set in one small elven village in a forested valley. Read them in any order.
Tropes: found family · a grumpy neighbour who warms up very slowly · slice-of-life village fantasy · autumn and harvest · craft as care · low stakes, no chosen one, no villain
