Maya Del Toro
Scandal. Betrayal. And most importantly, love.
Tales from Mexico’s Tequila Country
About Maya Del Toro
Maya Del Toro grew up in San Antonio, Texas, with Mexican roots and a thoroughly TexMex upbringing. English was the language at home, so she came by her Spanish the old-fashioned way: high school classes, college classes, and (she insists) a lot of telenovelas strictly for practice. Mexico always tugged at her anyway.
She went to college to become a teacher, only to discover there was no romance in it. Then she watched Mad Men and decided life as an ad agency copywriter sounded far more glamorous. It wasn’t, but it taught her to write fast and write well.
Then she married a man who sold tequila for a living. On her first trip to Jalisco, she met the distilling families, and she learned something important: when the tequila comes out, so do the stories. There were far too many tales of scandal, betrayal, and love to leave alone, and Maya has been working them into her fiction ever since.
By the time she realized what she needed most was time to write, she had thirteen stories sketched out. So she moved to Mexico, where she now calls herself an “Artist in Residence” (tongue firmly in cheek) and writes about the things that make hearts break and mend: scandal, betrayal, and, most importantly, love.
